Working Hard!

Kay continued to work hard this weekend.

Thursday was such a beautiful Thanksgiving Day that Devin was able to get Kay up and dressed and brought her down to the Mt. Sinai lobby in her wheel chair to take a look outside and feel the fall breeze. What a great way to start an important day! Later in the day Kay had many family and friends come by to spend the day with her. Everyone is so thankful for the amazing progress she has made. In just 1 month she has come so far.

This weekend Kay showed a bit a movement with her right leg which was great. Slow and steady is how her progress should go.

Saturday Kay got a little frustrated with her physical therapist and Devin during her therapy sessions. She clearly told Devin to leave her alone at one point....whatever..we're just glad to see some more clear communication! It was Saturday, she probably wanted to hang out, not exercise...aren't weekends for resting?

This weekend Kay also got a mini makeover which we know she always loves. Saturday evening her girlfriends all came to visit and Monica painted her nails, not sure it's a manicure she'd pay for but she seemed happy. Later all her girlfriends gave her a basket of comfy clothes that she can wear in the hospital and to therapy...we know our girl always wants to look good. She seemed happy with the selections! We also read Kay some gossip mags and while she was very interested in watching The Real Housewives of Orange County (who wouldn't be?) she would grab the magazine to read herself when she heard something that interested her. While Kay seemed very excited to see all her friends at once and have a little get together it was a bit overwhelming for her...or at least the perfume was!

Sunday Kay also got a fab, sassy new haircut! It looks great and will be much more comfortable for her. Her old ponytail was getting some elementary school like knots that were pulling on her head. She's definitely the most well dressed and well groomed girl at Mt. Sinai Rehab!

Sunday Kay also did lots of reading. She was able to mouth many different words even beyond names when written on a white board. Kay also did some teaching herself. Monica & Courtney didn't remember sign language as well as she did so she gave them some refreshers when they were trying to spell their names. Kay was also singing again! Once again she was able to mouth most of the words to Sarah McLaughlin. She even told Devin, Monica & Courtney to "sshh" when she just wanted to listen and didn't want the rest of us singing out of tune.

Kay continues to work hard and it's easy to see how much she wants to progress. She tries to move around a lot and even attempts to get out of her wheelchair when she is in it. With all her hard work does come some frustrations sometimes, but it wouldn't be Kay if we didn't see any personality.

Keep supporting Kay through all her hard work. With everyone's support she will continue to progress more and more. Devin & the O'Mearas are an amazing support system, they are all working so hard with Kay. Everyone needs our support right now!

We Love You Kay!

Hi Kay,

So much news in today's post. It sounds like you had a busy weekend. A good night in with the girls always raises the spirits and and a bit of gossip and scandal only adds to the fun!

I can imagine that this is very frustrating stage of your recovery but you are doing a great job. Just take all of the time you need.

Lots of love to you and all the family.

Dear Kay and Devin,
wonderful news again! YAY!!! These little things that you are doing may seem like nothing to some people but to all of us you are amazing! I have worked in a hospital for over two years now as a nurse and have never seen progress happen so fast or even happen at all for that matter. You are absolutely an amazing, strong, hard working person who believes in herself and is confident in your recovery! I always tell my patients when you think negative, negative happens, when you think positive, positive happens! It is a known fact I've seen it before my own eyes! We all knew you would pull through this and come back to us better than ever! You are surrounded by positive people who adore and love you! You are such a lucky special person! Keep up this fight and we all will be right behind you and by your side helping you through with our prayers and thoughts and love! You have an amazing husband and an amazing family by your side at all times! You are so very blessed! You are in our thoughts and prayers every day all day long!

Love Always,
Ellen, Michael and Tayah

Kathleen,

What a thrill it was to hear you speak tonight. Also great to see you lift your right leg when Dr. Chen came to visit. You communicated quite forcefully and clearly when I mentioned David has been appropriating your washer and dryer in your new home. I know things seem confusing right now but you are surpassing everyones expectations by the minute. (Just like always)We are here to cocoon you with love and support in your healing time.

Love,
Stephen

Kay, This is the greatest news that you are talking again. I know that must make you really happy. It's been frustrating I know when you had been trying to tell us something and we couldn't make it out.

So now you can keep everyone in line. I just feel like standing up and screaming "HOORAY".

Love

Hi Kay,

So delighted with all the latest good news, you're amazing, keep it up girl.
Couldn't help smiling when I read about the new hairdo, bet you look stunning. I remembered your fleeting fluster on your wedding day when you complained that your bump (hair) wasn't high enough. In Ireland, bumps and brides don't usually go together so we had a bit of a laugh.
Can't wait to hear you laugh again and see you throw your head back in delight. We have a super picture of you doing just that.
So pleased for Devin and all the family, what a blessing to have you chatting with them again.

You are always in our thoughts and prayers.
Fondest love,
Chris, Pat and family

Kathleen -

I should have been studying for our way-fun fluid/acid-base/electrolyte balance exam yestrtday. Instead I pulled out my axe and the long untouched sheet music for the amazing Sarah MacLachlan's "Building A Mystery" last night. As I was playing, 90.7FM WFUV played an interview and live session with her on the radio. Wow, you're speaking to me in many ways - thanks!

Go, go. Love, Jeff

HEY KAY!!
I am so excited to hear the news! I can only imagine how badly Devin, your mom, Cindy, Stephen, and well...EVERYONE wanted to hear your voice.
Your progress has been amazing. I've shared your story with some people here at work, and when I give them these updates, they are truly and genuinely happy.
You are touching more lives than you could even imagine.
Pretty soon it won't be 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon anymore, it will be 6 degrees of Kay O'meara Macdonald.
:)

Keep up the fight girl. We are ALL here in your corner, rooting you on!

Kay,

I hope today is even a better day for you. I know you will surprise us again with the amazing progress you are making.

I saw Tina last night and the first thing she said wasn't a hello it was SHE'S TALKING. Just to see Tina so HAPPY and PROUD made me cry of joy.

Keep up the good work you are totally amazing. Don't push too hard one day at a time.

Always in my thoughts and prayers

Hello again,

I know that I've already posted but I'm going away for a few days and might not be able to check in again until Sunday night. I had to drop you a line to say that I'm so glad that you've found your voice again.

One of my favourite family stories is then when dad was a young teenager he got himself in small spot of bother (i'll spare the detail to protect the guilty) and was getting major earache from nana.

After taking as much as he felt he could bear he told her to "shut up!" (there were probably a few extra words that went with it but we'll skip those!)

Nana's classic response was "Son you have more chance of keeping that tide out with a hay fork than getting me to shut up right now!" Oh yes, the Maloney's can talk alright!

Keep on talking girl, until you're blue in the face and then talk some more. You're amazing!

Lots of love from

I pray for you daily, and hope you can feel all the love and prayers sent your way. Keep up the good work!
Love
